Our Story
The Science Of Scalp: How This Trichologist Is Bridging Beauty And Healthcare
Inside a South Florida clinic, data, diagnostics, and decades of experience are redefining personalized beauty at the cellular level.

Personalization has become the buzzword of choice in the $500 billion global beauty industry. But while major brands scramble to customize shampoo fragrances or blend foundation shades, Myrlande "Mimi" Elien has been quietly transforming personalized hair care through a clinical approach that's gaining attention in South Florida and beyond.
More Than a Salon: The Trichology Clinic Model

At first glance, SS Hair Care in Pembroke Pines, Florida, might seem like another high-end salon. But step inside, and you'll find private examination rooms, specialized equipment, and a staff that operates more like medical assistants than stylists.
"We're a trichology clinic," says Elien, who founded the business after three decades in the beauty industry. "Your visit with us is not 30 minutes, 40 minutes. Everything is analyzed and carefully looked into. We personalize your shampoos, treatments, everything."
Mimi Elien, a licensed cosmetologist who also identifies as a holistic health practitioner specializing in trichology (the study of hair and scalp), has built a business model that stands in sharp contrast to traditional salons. Her approach merges cosmetology techniques with health assessment, creating what she calls "a doctor's office for your hair."
Data-Driven Beauty

Personalization at SS Hair Care goes far beyond choosing a scent or color. Every client undergoes an initial assessment, which becomes the foundation for customized product formulations.
"Your hair and scalp changes even with your emotions," Elien explains. "When a stylist isn't aware of that, they'll use the same products every time, which is why women often say 'I've been going there but it hasn't been working lately.'"
This insight led Elien to develop her product line, which crucially differs from mass market offerings: nothing is pre-mixed. Each product is freshly formulated based on the client's current condition.

"We don't mass produce. We custom formulate. That's what makes the difference."

For clients with persistent issues, Elien employs hair analysis testing to examine mineral content, checking for elevated levels of elements like arsenic, lead, magnesium, copper, and zinc. "The blood work just gives me what's going on now," she notes. "The hair analysis test gives me six, seven months back."
The Business of Holistic Hair Care
The SS Hair Care business model operates on multiple revenue streams. Beyond client services and product sales, Elien has developed an accredited SS Hair Care Advanced Training Academy, offering specialized courses for licensed cosmetologists and others interested in trichology.
She's also created what she calls a "digest" – a comprehensive guide covering how factors like stress, medications, and nutrition affect hair health. The educational material includes self-assessment quizzes and actionable advice.
"This isn't just about shampoo. This is preventive care in a bottle."

While Elien declined to share specific revenue figures during her recent interview on the Follow Brand Podcast, the business model demonstrates potential for scale through its educational offerings and product line, without compromising the personalized approach that sets it apart.
A Growing Client Base
SS Hair Care primarily serves what Elien describes as "retirement women, business professional women, women that are on medication." The clinic has built trust with clients dealing with issues ranging from medication-related hair loss to traction alopecia caused by certain hairstyles.
Particularly notable is MiMi's work with cancer patients and others facing medical hair loss. "Going through chemotherapy, it is what it is," she tells clients. "Right now, we need to give yourself some grace and know that this is a process. We're going to focus on the health, and when we're done with the chemo and the doctor gives clearance, we'll go into follicle stimulation."
This compassionate yet practical approach has helped Elien build a six-generation client base – women who've been with her for decades, along with their daughters, granddaughters, and extended family members.
Industry Context and Challenges
Elien's approach represents a growing trend of specialized beauty services that bridge the gap between cosmetics and healthcare. The global hair care market is projected to reach $105.3 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research, with personalized and health-oriented offerings driving significant growth.
While MiMi's business seems well-positioned in this evolving landscape, scaling such a personalized model presents challenges. The time-intensive nature of customization and the specialized training required for staff limit rapid expansion possibilities.
Additionally, beauty industry skeptics point out that while trichology is a recognized field of study, some holistic approaches to hair care lack robust clinical validation. Dermatologists generally recommend that individuals with persistent hair loss consult medical specialists alongside exploring specialized beauty services.
Looking Forward
As wellness increasingly merges with beauty, MiMi's clinical approach to hair care offers valuable insights for the broader industry. Her focus on treating root causes rather than symptoms aligns with consumer demands for products and services that deliver more than superficial benefits.
For entrepreneurs, SS Hair Care demonstrates the potential of niche specialization within a crowded market. By establishing expertise that crosses traditional industry boundaries, MiMi has created a distinctive brand position that larger competitors can't easily replicate.
"I tell my clients, your scalp tells a story before your blood work does," Elien says.
As the beauty industry continues its evolution toward holistic health, that story is one more businesses may want to learn to read.
